Going ‘Green’ Shows You Care
By Karen Akers

Whether you’re trying to reach school kids, soccer moms, college students or professionals, using recycled products in your promotions sends a positive message about your firm. It shows recipients you care about the environment while memorably presenting your logo and name. And if that’s not reason enough, just take a look at the products themselves. There are so many different recycled products available these days that you might have trouble selecting just one.

SOLID CHOICE. Anyone who takes notes on the run knows it can be awkward when you don’t have something to lean on. This jotter solves the problem environmentally. It’s fashioned from 40% post-consumer recycled aluminum and features recycled paper as well. Students, writers, business travelers – actually anyone who’s frequently on the go – will appreciate its sturdy and stylish construction as well as its handiness.

SHAPES GALORE. Beyond the obvious choices of bars and/or restaurants, coasters can be used to spread a firm’s message among home owners/renters, office workers, teachers, etc. These are made from recycled rubber – naturally water- and skid-proof. Along with the shapes shown here, the coaster material can also be made into placemats, mousepads and pet mats.

MINI MESSENGERS. It seems like a perfect natural: how better to convey a message about recycling than using miniature recycling bins? Available with crayons, coloring puzzle/coin-slot cover; seed packets, peat pellets or alone, they have a variety of uses. The various accessories help get your message across, while the bins themselves serve as a lasting reminder of your company’s caring and goodwill. Good for schools, restaurants, libraries, community centers, environmental groups, associations, local/federal government organizations, etc.

ALTERNATIVE PLASTIC. Every year, Americans throw away about 1.6 million pens. Stacked end-to-end, they’d stretch for about 151 miles. Help your customers be less wasteful with these environmentally friendly refillable wooden pens. Constructed from sustained-yield birch and beechwood – wood scraps discarded by furniture manufacturers – they’re made so that recipients will most likely want to keep and use them (along with your message) for a long time. The pens also feature recycled steel, refillable brass cartridges and nontoxic ink. They’re also laser engraved to avoid the harsh chemicals sometimes used in the imprinting process.

OUR MOVE. Who said recycling can’t be fun? This travel chess set is made from EVA recycled material. Its slim construction means it’s easy to bring along on any trip and its travel-specific design makes sure games aren’t disrupted by bumps in the road or other turbulence. Once the game’s over, the pieces neatly and securely snap back into place, ensuring they’ll be there next time you’re ready to play.

WEIGHING IN. Created from free-formed, polished, recycled glass, each one of these paperweights is one of a kind. They’re the perfect size for employee- or customer-appreciation gifts, to mark a special event or even to use as a business card. This example is golden amber, but they’re also available in “sultry smoke” and “gleaming ebony.”

SMART & THRIFTY. Remember those pens that came with real shredded U.S. currency in the barrel? These piggy banks are kind of a modern reinterpretation. The retired currency can be rendered into a plastic-like substance, and molded into the shapes seen here as well as a few others, including picture frames, rulers, combs, noteholders, ice scrapers and more. The pigs easily lend themselves to a dual “saving” theme – money and the environment – that banks, schools, businesses, organizations and others can easily take advantage of. Products made from recycled denim (yes, as in old jeans) are also available.

CLASSIC CRAFTSMANSHIP. Made from recycled glass, this colorful drinkware is mouth-blown and hand-shaped. Restaurants, bars, hotels, resorts, even corporate clients can help make a lasting impression on patrons by using them, or the drinkware can also be used as incentives or gifts for customers, employees or prospects. In addition to the styles and colors shown, many others are available, including pilsner, wine, juice and shot glasses, tumblers, goblets, pitchers, vases, dinnerware and more.
