Collective Creativity
Paws For Identification
By Karen Akers

Pet lovers are a strange breed. Seems they’re constantly swapping stories about Cleo’s latest furball or Spot’s fondness for toilet-bowl water. Whether you roll your eyes at every new “You wouldn’t believe what Snookems did yesterday …” story or join right in with a pet tale of your own, you can’t deny the strong bond that exists between pets and their owners. And you don’t have to be a pet-related business to show your affection for your clients’ furry friends. Any company that has pet-owning customers – and isn’t that nearly every firm out there? – can inspire customer and/or employee loyalty by using pet-related products.

AU REVIOR, ROVER.
Considered members of the family, some pets travel with their owners everywhere. Now devoted owners can make a record of the pet’s trips with a “Pet Passport.” And for those pets that venture no further than their local parks, the passport provides plenty of other useful information as well, including veterinary tips and places for the pet’s photo,
dental/medical records, family tree information and more. They can make a welcome gift for any owner who might want to keep a written record of their pet’s life. asi/78817

BEAST OF BURDEN. Help ease a dog owner’s load by letting their pets lend a paw (or four). Thanks to these 500-denier cordura nylon saddlebags, dogs can now comfortably carry treats, toys, keys, water bottles, or any number of other small items. The bags feature two main compartments, compression straps to secure the load, a breathable mesh back with a pocket and adjustable straps. They can be screened or embroidered and come in sizes for small, medium and large dogs. A matching collapsible bowl is also available. asi/75435

MAILMAN’S BEST FRIEND.
Here’s some mail that dogs are actually allowed to chew up. Any company can send goodwill to their clients’ furry friends with these rawhide greeting cards. They’re available either custom-imprinted with nontoxic food coloring or in several stock designs featuring characters from the Citizen Dog comic strip. Client doesn’t have a pup? Not a problem; edible cards for bird are also available. asi/77800

GOOD EATS.
There’s probably no easier way to make pets happier than by giving them treats. And making their pets happy can help make your pet-loving customers happy as well. There are a number of choices out there, but to name just a couple, you can send out a tin of “extra special” doggie treats (they’re also available wrapped in a bandanna). For the more creative, consider make-your-own dog or cat treat kits, which can also include themed cookie cutters. asi/76791

SEE AND BE SEEN. All too often, families end up grieving for a pet because it wandered off or was hit by a car, usually at night when drivers couldn’t see them. You can help prevent these sad occurrences by using reflective ID tags in your next promotion. They’re a good way to show pet-loving customers that you care about more than their business. Available products include name tags, collar tabs, leash covers and rings and even ankle-band reflectors that can be used for large farm animals. asi/81233

THEY’LL LAP THIS UP.
People aren’t the only ones who get thirsty on long-distance walks; pets need hydration too. Thankfully, there are products like this insulated water bottle/pet bowl combo that humans and animals can share. And there’s no need to worry about germs. The owner can pour water into the attached collapsible bowl for the pet, then take a drink from the bottle himself. asi/91113

FIRST AID FOR FELIX. Vets, as any pet owner knows, aren’t cheap by any means. And there’s usually no way to avoid taking the cat or dog to the vet for every little nick and scratch they might pick up – until now, that is. Behold the “Pet-Medic” first-aid kit! It’s an imprintable waterproof nylon bag that contains a pet-injury reference book, various ointments and creams, bandages, cotton swabs, rubber gloves and other medical supplies that can quickly and safely treat some of those minor injuries without incurring a major vet bill. asi/43006

QUICK & EASY. Help pet owners keep things cleaner – and legal – with these much-appreciated clean-up bags. They can use the “Flushable Bag” to hold pet waste whenever necessary and, when done, either go home and flush the whole thing or bury it and forget about it. Since the bags are biodegradable, either way is safe for the environment. A little queasy about putting your logo on such a product? Don’t worry; it goes on an enclosed instruction sheet, not the bag itself. They can be used anywhere you might need a quick cleanup, like public parks, pet stores, veterinarians, dog shows, pet-friendly hotels, kennels, etc. asi/98010

SIT. STAY. GOOD DOG. For most dog owners, training puppies – or worse, older dogs – isn’t something they eagerly look forward to. Anything that makes this task easier is usually appreciated. Keeping that in mind, you might be able to teach your pet-owning clients to have more loyalty with this dog-training kit. Complete with two instructional videos, a training lead and 10 laminated field cards. In other words, it contains virtually everything owners need for effective training. asi/54452
