The Promotional Idea Showcase - Spring 2002 - Updated Quarterly

Promotional planning calendar

June

1-30: National Safety Month. Employee safety is always a primary goal. Or should be. Time to re-evaluate your own safety program.

2: Heirloom Seed Day.
Stressing the idea of growing “heirloom” vegetables. Excellent promo-op for nurseries, gardening centers, seed companies, etc.
8: George Bryan Brummel: Birthday. Better known as Beau, well-known fashion leader and sartorial trend-setter. Interesting tie-in for any clothing store, fashion-oriented magazine, catalog house, and so on. Imprinted apparel and/or mirrors could work best.

12: Howard Edward Grange: Birthday. As Red Grange, he’s probably one of the best-known football players in the game’s history. His name can be invoked for any promo with a football or simply a sports theme.

17: Watergate Day. The infamous break-in occurred today, 1972. Great for a “bug” related promo.
19: Moe Howard: Birthday. The head stooge of all incarnations of the Three Stooges. OK; they were violent, sloppy and silly, but they were still true comic geniuses. Offbeat theme for any promo that can use a touch (or ton) of humor.

24: Lunar Eclipse. At 4:18 pm, EDT. It won’t be visible from everywhere, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be part of an ad campaign.

1-30: National Rivers Month. Recognizing the importance of rivers nationwide. Municipal governments and riverfront businesses, both industrial and consumer (restaurants, clubs, parks) can all get into the act, as can any businesses (floating casinos, entertainment boats) on the water itself.
5: World Environment Day. All of the planet’s other troubles don’t mean much if we can’t live on it. A good day to re-dedicate a firm’s commitment to cleaning up pollution in any form.
10: Alcoholics Anonymous Founding Anniversary. AA Co-founders Dr. Robert Smith and William Wilson started the organization in 1935. A good time, perhaps, to re-emphasize any substance-abuse programs you have for employees, as well as launch any anti-abuse program.
14: Flag Day. Now more important than ever.
16: Family Awareness Day. Emphasizing the importance of family in our culture. Any firm or group can be part of it.
18: National Splurge Day. Urging folks to go out and do something indulgent and/or extravagant. Great for upscale — real or perceived — stores, restaurants, salons, gyms/spas, theatres and so on.
23: First Typewriter Anniversary. The very first writing machine was patented today, 1868. A truly unexpected event to launch any computer-linked promo.
30: Siberian Explosion Anniversary. On this day, 1908, what’s been called history’s most powerful explosion occurred over Siberia. A meteorite? Nobody knows for sure, but it was visible for hundreds of miles. For any promo with an “explosive” theme.
