The Promotional Idea Showcase - Spring 2002 - Updated Quarterly

Promotional planning calendar

August

3: Mustard Day. Pay tribute to every variety of the tasty condiment. Neat idea for restaurants and food stores, of course, but why not an office contest or buffet lunch, with appropriate products?
11-17: Resurrect Romance Week. Encouraging folks to generate romantic feelings and atmosphere. Resorts, deluxe hotels, lingerie shops, restaurants, florists., etc., can be involved.
13: Berlin Wall Erected. In 1961, and dismantled in 1989. Any kind of “breaking down barriers” theme can be enhanced here.
21: Poet’s Day. A no-brainer for bookstores, libraries, schools and literary societies, but again, your counselor can suggest much broader applications.
31: Litigating Lawyers Day. Fact one: We all make nasty jokes about them. Fact two: Some really do make pond scum look noble. Fact three: Not all of them are bad. We really do need them in our business and personal lives, hassle though it may be sometimes.
1-31: National Back To School Month. Time for the stay-at-home parent to get back to normalcy. All kinds of campaigns can be worked around it, using logoed school supplies – or not.
6: National Night Out. Firms have been increasingly latching onto this event, part of the take-back-our-streets movement. A night for citizens to learn how to strengthen their ties with law enforcement at outdoor events. Give out a crime-prevention promotional product.
15: Transcontinental US Railway Completion Anniversary. The famous golden spike was hammered today, 1870. Interesting hook-up to anything with a cross-country/nationwide theme, and of course, anything train-related.
26: Krakatoa Eruption Anniversary. In case you missed June 30 and have a promotion that can use an “explosive” theme, here’s a second chance. The volcanic explosion, which happened in 1883, is also considered one of history’s biggest.
