Collective Creativity
Try Something Edgy
By Karen Akers

Knives, rulers and other edged products can be a great way to convey your company’s message. Not only do they easily lend themselves to clever taglines – “sharp,” “cutting edge,” “a cut above,” etc., – but they’re generally useful tools that people hang on to. And the longer your clients keep and use them, the longer they keep your company in mind. Here are just a few examples of edged products – ask your counselor for more creative suggestions.

SIMPLE & STYLISH. With the advent of social drinking becoming OK again, provided it’s sensible, ask your counselor about this sleek bar tool. It has everything needed to get the party started – corkscrew, foil blade and bottle opener – and folds up neatly for easy portability. The compact design can be easily carried almost anywhere. Available in three colors and packaged in a metal gift box.

LIGHT THE WAY. Not your ordinary knife. The “Centurion Knife-Light” has a sturdy blade useful for many in- and outdoor tasks, while its bright LED light, built right into the handle, lights things up. The blade is available in straight-edge or serrated and the light’s bulb and battery are replaceable. While just about anybody can use a knife at one time or another, don’t forget contractors, home owners, repairmen,
landscapers, hunters, hikers, fishermen and others.

YOU’LL RULE. You’ve heard of multifunction tools. Check out the multifunction ruler. Its handle makes it easy to hold, lift and move around, and its magnifier can be very useful in many situations, too. Add a pair of scissors conveniently stored in one end and you’ve
got much more than your average measuring device. Schools, home-improvement/hardware stores, offices, etc., can use it in a promotional campaign.

SHARP DESIGN. Clever design makes the “Hip Clip Pencil Sharpener” a keeper. Its spring-loaded clip lets you quickly attach it to backpacks, purses, belt loops or wherever, and its reservoir holds messy shavings. It’s a small item that can make a big impression on students, teachers, writers – pretty much anyone who uses a pencil.

GET THE PARTY STARTED. It’s hard not to associate a company with positive thoughts when it gives out products made especially for
parties. But that’s not to say the “Party Spreader” isn’t also useful on a daily basis. Recipients will appreciate its smaller size, solid
construction and lifetime guarantee. It can make a great holiday gift – just in time for all those parties – or a thank-you to new-home buyers, loyal customers or employees. For better reception, pair it with food such as a cheese or meat spread.

GOAL! Scraping ice off the car is a little less boring with this hockey-skate shaped scraper. Made from high-impact plastic, its long handle and oversized edge make clearing auto windows easier. And, the sports-related design makes it a great promotional item for all sorts of companies – bars, sporting goods stores, skating centers, sports teams, health clubs, etc. Also available in soccer, baseball, football and basketball designs.

OLD STANDARD, NEW LOOK. If you’ve ever been caught somewhere without a pair of scissors, nail clippers or tweezers, you’ll have a new appreciation for just how useful a small Swiss Army Knife can be. Now the knife’s been made even more useful than before by adding a flashlight to some models. Along with the traditional red, other finishes and colors, including new “Camo” styles with nonreflective
stainless steel implements, are now available.

QUICK FIX. If you’re after a simple product that gets right to the point, these bread knives may be a good choice. The white plastic handles can be imprinted with your logo or message and the serrated blades, of surgical stainless steel, zip through everything from rye to kaiser rolls. Supermarkets, restaurants, new neighbor/homeowners groups, bakeries, delis, gourmet food shops and others can use them to attract new clients or show appreciation to current ones.
