The Promotional Idea Showcase - Fall 2002 - Updated Quarterly

Promotional Planning Calendar

JANUARY

3: Memento Mori Day. Worth repeating; it’s Italian for “Remember, you die.” A day to celebrate life, emphasizing that our time here is a gift, and we should treat it as such. Interesting idea for almost any “beginning a new year” theme.
6: Twelfth Day of Christmas, aka/Epiphany. Excellent time for a lighthearted promotion based on any verse of the well-known Christmas song.
12: National Handwriting Day. Celebrated, appropriately enough, on John Hancock’s birthday. Logoed pens, anyone?
16: National Nothing Day. A day, in the words of inventor Harold Pullman, “to provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit around without celebrating, observing or honoring anything.” Except, perhaps, Nothing Day…
21: National Hugging Day. Give or receive a few today, but always out of true warmth. However, this is the age of the sexual harassment lawsuit, so choose targets knowledgeably.
31: First Social Security Check Issued Anniversary. The first one ever went to Ida Fuller on this day, 1940. Total amount: $22.54 – probably the same amount that’ll be left for us when we retire.
1-31: Celebrate the Past Month. Encouraging us to accurately remember stories and general history of the 20th century so it can be passed on to others. Great for bookstores, libraries, schools, companies using time-capsule themed promos, etc.
5: $5 Minimum Wage Anniversary. The country’s first minimum wage was established today, 1914, at $5 … a day. It was instituted by Henry Ford, but only for employees of “good personal habits,” as determined by Ford Co.’s sociological department.

5-11: National Thank Your Customers Week. Without ‘em we’d be nonexistent. All kinds of campaigns can be built around this, incorporating a dinner/luncheon, special mailing, etc.

14: Clean Off Your Desk Day. Another one worth repeating. As the name suggests, a day to get rid of everything there that’s outdated or unwanted.
18: Peter Mark Roget: Birthday. English doctor, best known for his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases. Unexpected promo-op for bookstores, libraries, schools or any firm that wants to support more creativity and diversity in writing.
22: David Wark Griffith: Birthday. American film pioneer director/producer, considered by some the father of true cinema. Video stores, theatres, TV stations, film libraries/museums and more can benefit.
