The Promotional Idea Showcase - Fall 2002 - Updated Quarterly

Promotional Planning Calendar

DECEMBER

1: World AIDS Day. Promoting awareness and support. Still a good cause for virtually any business.
4: Extraordinary Work Team Recognition Day. Giving business teams who accomplish those tough objectives the spotlight they deserve. A contest format can be used, with logoed gifts and prizes (a check wouldn’t hurt, either) going to all participants.
8: Elzie Crisler Segar: Birth-day. Who? The name isn’t as memorable as his most famous creation: Popeye. Offbeat day for supermarkets, restaurants (spinach salad specials?), food companies, as well as any promo requiring a strength or good vs. bad theme. Remember, though; Popeye’s licensed.

14: Nostradamus: Birthday. Born Michel De Notredame, he was a doctor but far more recognized for his written prophesies. Many people even today believe they have and will foretell the future. Libraries, bookstores, radio stations, schools, etc., can use this, as well as the office.

21: Winter Begins. The solstice hits at 8:14 p.m., EST. Tire stores, auto-body shops, car-supply retailers, coffee shops, snow-shovel makers/sellers, can all participate.

31: Leap Second Adjustment Time. Time to add or subtract a second from clock time to coordinate astronomical and atomic time. Great for any time-related promo.

1-7: Cookie-Cutter Week. Celebrating the many faces of cookies and the cutters that make them. Fun promo possibilities.
5: Prohibition Repeal Day. Liquor finally became legal again today, 1933, when Congress realized the futility of prohibition. Great day for taverns, liquor stores, wineries, breweries, etc., to promote drinking sensibly.
10: U.N.: Third Decade to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination. The first decade began in 1973. The third ends in 2003. Be nice if we could get it together before then. Again, anyone can participate.
12: Poinsettia Day. Honoring Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, who introduced the popular holiday plant to the United States.
17: First Powered Flight Anniversary. Wilbur and Orville did their thing on this day, 1903. Interesting approach to any promotion involving air travel – airports and airlines, of course, but also vacation spots, travel agencies, cruise lines, cities (business meetings/conventions), even contests with trips as a prize.
20: Underdog Day. Recognizing all those second fiddles who make the first fiddles look so good all the time.
21: Humbug Day. Those who find Christmas frustrating, stressful and aggravating are permitted 12 “humbugs” today to vent.
23: Humphrey Bogart and Cab Calloway: Birthdays. Talk about an interesting entertainment combo. All kinds of hi-de-ho promotions can be centered around this, schweetheart.
