National
Drunk & Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month. Everyone knows
that driving while under the influence of intoxicating drugs
or drinks is unsafe. But sometimes – especially around
the holidays – people need a friendly reminder. Colleges,
businesses, restaurants, community groups and others can promote
safe and sober driving with mailers, imprinted cups/napkins at
bars and restaurants, posters, party favors, etc. Learn more
about 3D month at www.ncadd.com/3dmonth.
Safe
Toys & Gifts Month. In 2002, more than 165,000 children
aged 14 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for
toy-related injuries, and at least 13 children 14 and under did
not survive toy-related traumas that year. So, since more than
half of all children’s toys are purchased during the holiday
shopping season, it’s a good time to emphasize the importance
of toy safety. Pediatricians, hospitals, schools, day care centers,
local sports organizations and others can help get the safe-toy-and-gift
message out to kids’ parents, friends and families. For more
statistics and tips for buying safe toys, visit National Safe Kids
Campaign at www.safekids.org/.
December
12-18: Tell Someone They’re Doing A Good Job Week. Make sure employees don’t feel unappreciated. Use this week
for individual employee recognition or to tell workers as a whole
that their effort is appreciated. Anything from an imprinted pen
to an elegant award can do the trick.
December
14-28: Halcyon Days. Traditionally the 14 days surrounding the winter
solstice,
the observance gets its name from the mythical
halcyon bird. It’s supposedly a time of tranquility when
the winds and waves are calm. And, just about anyone can use some
tranquility this time of year.
December
17: Underdog Day. Today’s a day to recognize all
the unsung heroes that make the big shots look good – those
people who otherwise wouldn’t get the congratulations they
deserve. There’s probably at least one at every company who
deserves an award, plaque, watch, mug, T-shirt or some other gift
of appreciation.
December
17: The Simpsons TV Premiere Anniversary. Who knew that what began
on TV as an
animated segment of The Tracey Ullman Show
would turn into one of TV’s longest running comedies? (It
wrapped up its 15th season in 2004, surpassing The Adventures of
Ozzie & Harriet as the longest running sitcom.) “Simpsons
Roasting on an Open Fire” premiered on the Fox network 15
years ago today, and it didn’t take long for Simpsons-mania
to hit the country. Licensing possibilities aside, it’s a
good opportunity to celebrate families in their many forms – even
ones with bratty kid brothers, beer- and doughnut-loving dads and
blue-haired moms.
