The Promotional Idea Showcase - Fall 2000 - Updated Quarterly

Promotional planning calendar

February:

1-28: National Snack Food Month. As just about everyone loves chips, pretzels, crackers, popcorn et al, virtually any business can take part, using imprinted containers of snack foods.

3: Day The Music Died. Rock & roll pioneers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash on this day in 1959. Their music, fortunately, has survived. Interesting
promotional idea for record stores, radio stations or any place or event with a ’50s theme.

5: Weatherperson’s Day. Saluting those folks, meteorologists and not, who tell us each day what it will be like outside. Umbrellas, sun screen, rain gauges or sunglasses could all work.

11: Thomas Edison: Birthday. When you consider all the stuff he invented that we use on a daily, if not hourly, basis, there are all types of companies that can jump on this: electric firms, film studios, movie theaters and record companies/stores, and that’s just for starters. Born 1847.

12: Lost Penny Day. Y’know all those pennies we tend to accumulate? Time to get them back into circulation. They can be donated to charity or cashed in at a bank. One idea might be to hold a penny contest, ending today.

14: Read To Your Child Day. Excellent opportunity for libraries, PTAs, schools, bookstores, publishers, etc., not to mention any business seeking community involvement.

17-18: Second Honeymoon Weekend. The possibilities are definitely more interesting than a Valentine’s Day promo and can include hotels, bed and breakfasts, florists, lingerie shops, perfume/cologne manufacturers/sellers, restaurants, travel agents and so on. Logoed chocolate, silk flowers and more can be used.

20: Northern Hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day. Complete silliness: Everyone north of the equator is supposed to walk outside at noon and scream “Hoodie-Hoo” to chase away winter. So far, no hard reports that it’s worked. But it never hurts to try.

23: Samuel Pepys: Birthday. History’s most famous diary-keeper was born today, 1633. A good time to promote the keeping of. Oh, yeah ... they’re available imprinted. So are pens.

28: Floral Design Day. Recognizing it as an art form. Florists, floral schools and art galleries can all participate.
